Shelter: The Pit House

These longer-term shelters can be built just about anywhere and are as safe as you can get in a situation where your home is not safe, but you need to stay put for a while. They are also very simple to build.

Step 1: Location is Everything.

Find an elevated position that is not susceptible to flooding, such as the side of the hill.

Step 2: Dig.

Dig a huge hole. It is as simple as that. However much space you want in your pit shelter is as big as it needs to be.

Step 3: Reinforce.

You are going to want more than just mud and dirt for walls. Line and reinforce the walls with stripped logs, rocks or whatever materials you have available.

Step 4: Keep the Rain Out.

Put a roof on your pit. Use stripped logs, downed branches or whatever else you have available.

Step 5: Hide It.

You don’t want to advertise to every passerby where your shelter is, so don’t leave a giant pile of dirt nearby from where you dug. Spread it out and place some on top of your roof. Make it look natural – like it belongs there.
